A exhibition of plein air landscape paintings of the Devon and Dorset coast.

Tom Hughes paints from life, in his landscape painting this means setting up his easel outdoors, “en plein air”, whatever the weather might be. Capturing what he really sees and realising this in oil paint is what is important to Tom and challenged by often rapidly changing light conditions he has to work quickly and with accuracy. The result is light infused paintings with deft brushstrokes where the vigour and energy he feels working in this way is transmuted in his canvases.

Still working from life, in the studio Tom paints still life compositions, frequently capturing his life in the studio, jars, paints, brushes and paraphenalia.

Pursuing his own painting for exhibition since 2012 Tom has enjoyed considerable success; being selected for exhibition in the BP Portrait Prize, the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize and The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. In 2014 he won both the Benton Purchase Prize at the Discerning Eye and Second Prize at the ROI at Mall Galleries, London.
