Gregory Mason
Gregory Mason lives and paints in Devon. He was a graduate of St Martin’s, London in the mid 80’s and pursued a career as an illustrator and designer before returning to painting in recent years. He has exhibited with the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts, Red Earth Gallery and East Forde Arts.
Gregory’s practice resonates with the classical traditions of figurative painting in oil; focussing on the female nude and on the landscape he explores the tension between paint as material and paint as illusion.
The Devon landscape and in particular Dartmoor provides a constant flow of inspiration, the passing seasons, shades and rhythms of light and patterns of texture translated in his paintings. His work recognises landscape painting as an age-old tradition which calls upon a sense of place, affirming origins and challenging our own sense of scale in relation to the space around us.
Gregory's painting of the female nude seeks to be non-exploitative in its creation, responding simply to form texture and beauty to tells its story.
