Marcelle Milo-Gray
Marcelle Milo-Gray studied at Exeter College of Art and Design. For many years she combined teaching with a family life and painting however since 2001 she has been working exclusively for exhibitions. Marcelle has exhibited Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
Marcelle works in a traditional way, preparing gessoed panels and often underpainting the composition in egg tempera which gives depth and luminosity to the colour, before she over-paints in oils. Working from tonal drawings she uses the people, places and gardens in her life as her starting point and weaves them together into structured compositions.
Focusing on quiet, intimate moments her images capture those things we do privately to keep a little bit of sanity in a busy world. Whether gardening or drinking a cup of tea she creates peaceful places where there is time to stop and stare. On occasion these everyday activities take place alongside the wondrous or almost surreal and the image tips over into the realms of serene fantasy, transporting us to a place which is contemplative and restorative.
