Sarah grew up in Rotherham, South Yorkshire and studied illustration at Newport Art College. Working in London as an illustrator in the late 1980’s she was much in demand, popular with clients such as The Royal National Theatre, Decca Records, Penguin books and Time Magazine.
In 1995 Sarah moved to South Wales and since then has concentrated on her personal work. Since completing her Master of Fine Arts at Bath Spa University in 2005 her painting has been widely appreciated and she has been invited to exhibit at several prestigious galleries; Oriel Davies, Powys; Stroud House Gallery, Stroud; Lynne Strover, Cambridge.
In 2009 she was selected for the Threadneedle Prize Exhibition at The Mall Galleries, London and for 157th Autumn Exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol.
She has been short-listed twice for the Purchase Prize at Oriel Y Bont, University of Glamorgan (2008, 2006) and for the Welsh Artist of the Year in 2007.
Sarah has exhibited with Hybrid since 1994 and shows her most recent series of paintings, Wonder Rooms this year. These paintings are her contemporary equivalent of the Renaissance collector’s "cabinet of curiosities" where new and precious marvels, from monkey teeth to Egyptian figurines would be displayed next to artworks and fossils. Sarah selects from her own collection of objects, items to put together and portray in real size still lifes. In this way revealing her personal taste, she encourages an intimate interaction; comparison and parallel and provokes a dialogue between painter and viewer.
Her compositions indicate a clarity of thought and meticulous attention to detail without being laboured. The paint is applied with care to the canvas surface; creating textures she describes the subjects with a lightness of touch leaving the whole beautifully achieved.
