Sally has
lived and worked in Brighton since graduating from the illustration degree
course there ten years ago. Since then she has continued to develop her style
of image making and translated her original collage technique into a considerably
more convenient digital format. As a freelance illustrator Sally has worked
for clients such as the BBC, Pearson Education and WHSmiths but she has always
maintained a passion for her own choice of subject matter which is commonly,
though not exclusively, the natural world.
Commercial jobs often require very specific subjects and figures but in her
own work Sally loves to loosen up and simply celebrate natural forms and the
decorative silhouettes of leaves, tree branches, flowers and grasses. In the
examples you see here the focus is on the peculiar behaviour of birds; two
species of Bowerbird – the interior designers of the natural world - and the
Magpie. Each bird is attracted to man-made items and will collect them to
decorate their nests or attract a mate.
So many artists look to nature for their subject but Sally chooses to interpret
hers in a style that indicates her passion for mid century design and illustration.
Tapered, sweeping lines – simple, blocks of flat colour and a restrained palette
also make her designs ideal for silk screen printing.
Sally continues to produce as many new prints as she can
