Caroline
Frood studied Fine Art at Brighton. She then gained a Post-graduate Diploma
in Painting from the Royal Academy Schools in 1994 and in the same year was
given the Tooth Travel Award.
Initially Frood's work was abstract and quite textural although she always
maintained her objective drawing practice. In 1997 her work took a more representational
direction as she completed numerous studies of her young children. From this
point onwards portraiture and still life would form the core of her work.
Since this time she has exhibited at the South West Academy, the Royal Society
of Portrait Painters, the Mall Galleries. In 2006 she was a runner up in the
Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize and following on from this she was invited to
exhibit at Artonomy, Truro the following year. In Spring 2008 she exhibited
with two other women in London and in the autumn at Hybrid, Devon.
Caroline Frood paints exquisite still-lifes, landscapes and portraits; in
common to them all is her "intensity of gaze". Studying and painting a single
subject for weeks or months, she sustains a commitment to her subject matter
which ultimately lends weight and resonance to the finished work. In particular
the simple composition of a still-life together with her muted palette will
give her work a gentleness, subtlety and calmness. Frood conveys her sensitive
understanding of her subject and imbues her work with a significance beyond
it's mere appearance.
