James Hedge was born in Oxford in 1973. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and following graduation moved to Devon in 2003. Since this time he has been working on bodies of paintings defined by area; Hartland in North Devon, Colebooke in Mid Devon and the suburbs of Exeter.
His most recent works focus on the Exe estuary and in particular Dawlish Warren which offers a broad landscape, a wide sky and reflected light. Here he finds a huge diversity of both natural and human interest. His approach whilst founded on the observational is not to represent what he sees directly. He chooses instead to tease out the elements of interest to him in pursuit of a timeless portrayal of the landscape. Depicting small figures in a broad scape his work echoes the Romanticists notion of the "sublime" and evokes a resonant atmosphere of place.
