Irene Jones was born in Beeston, Nottinghamshire. From an early age she spent hours drawing and painting. At just 13 she attended an Art School which was attached to the Nottingham College of Arts and Crafts, where she later studied Graphic Design. After college she worked in Repertory Theatres in Nottingham and Cochester as an assistant set designer.
In 1970 she married and moved to Cornwall, as her children grew up painting began to take a more prominent role. Now Irene paints everyday and exhibits in galleries in Bristol, Plymouth, Cornwall and London.
Much of her work can be described as domestic realism. Subjects revolve around the home and the activity of family and friends yet there is always an element that removes these scenes away from the banal. It can be the lofty viewpoint she chooses from which to observe her subjects which skews the picture, or the inclusion of an unexplained object which moves it out of the ordinary.
Her paintings of fictional characters are reminiscent of medieval portraits yet have a timeless air. The women's sideways glances suggest action just out of view and a narrative we have only just caught a snatch of. Informed by dreams, fears and memories from childhood, Irene Jones world is entrancing, vaguely familiar and slightly eccentric.
