Gary Long
was born in Birmingham in 1945. He attended Birmingham College of Art after
which he spent two years working as an illustrator in Vancouver, Canada. On
returning to England he resumed study at Manchester College of Art. Leaving
college, he worked as a freelance illustrator for numerous national and international
clients in publishing and advertising for many years before moving to Devon
and then Cornwall, gradually concentrating more and more on his own painting.
Gary has exhibited in with several galleries in the UK, he has also showed
in Vermont, Nantucket Island and New York. He lives in St Ives and it is the
light and landscape of Cornwall that drew him there and that continues to
inform his painting. Gary also enjoys part-time lecturing at the University
College Falmouth.
Gary Long finds the inspiration for this collection of recent paintings in
the Cornish coast and countryside. Each work captures his response to a place
at a given moment in time under the influence of specific weather and light
conditions. In the studio, working from sketches, memory and intuition the
images become richly textural as Long translates onto the surface of the canvas
all the movement and energy he has found in his original subject; the landscape
and the forces of nature.
"It is with the push and drag of the paint building the surface to a point
where I feel I have got close to the essence of my first vision." Gary
