Marcelle Milo-Gray
Marcelle Milo-Gray studied at the University of Essex and also at Exeter College of Art and Design. For several years she combined teaching with a family life and her own painting. Since 2001 Marcelle has been able to devote herself exclusively to her own painting, working from a studio at home in South Devon.
Marcelle paints in a traditional way; preparing gessoed panels and often underpainting the composition in egg tempera, to give depth and luminosity before over-painting in oils. However her subjects are totally of the here and now; she uses as her starting point, the people, places and gardens in her life and weaves them together in structured compositions.
Focusing on peaceful, intimate moments her images capture those things we do privately to keep a little bit of sanity in a busy world. Sometimes tipping over into the realms of serene fantasy her images can transport us with them. At other times a hint at intrusion or possible disruption can heighten the sense of enjoyment of a secret pleasure or an amusement which may be slightly odd.
For the last 3 years Marcelle has exhibited annually in the RA Summer Exhibition, with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and with several galleries in the South West and South East.
Exhibition: Close to Home 4 - 25 September 2010
