Rachel studied at Central and St. Martin’s in the 1980’s. On graduating she began her career as an illustrator and has worked continually in this arena since then. She has completed commissions for many prestigious clients including the Savoy Hotel, The World Wildlife Fund and many book publishers.
Since 2007 Rachel has been devoting more time to her own work. Rediscovering themes and pre occupations present throughout her illustration career she has been developing them in a more personal way through her private paintings.
A core of skilled draughtsmanship is central to Rachel’s work, through her close study of day-to-day objects she reveals a beauty not immediately apparent. Her work though is elevated from simple "study" by the consideration given to composition. Isolating the subject or by placing it with other objects she gives it another context and imbues the subject with heightened weight or meaning. In this way she connects with the viewer as they project their experiences, memories and emotions onto seemingly mundane objects at the same time enjoying their intrinsic beauty.
Rachel lives in Edinburgh and in 2009 gained recognition at three major Scottish national exhibitions.
