Tony was born into a family of painters, he studied life drawing and design at Sutton Art School and moved into commercial design. He was a creative director during the 1980’s but finally returned to his first love of painting.

Tony has won the South West Academy prize and the Charles Pears Award 2015 from the Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition. He has shown with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and has been a regular contributor of articles for national and international art magazines.

His subjects move through the rural landscape of North Devon where he lives to the marine, inspired by the coast nearby. Recently he has been exploring the dockyard as subject, mixing his current experience with old family photographic reference. In all his work there is the desire for the viewer to interact not only with the subject but with the technique used to describe it. Tony says of his work,

“I try to find a dynamic interpretation of my subject and marks that go just far enough into description to leave the spirit of the brush doing the rest. The under painting should still be evident almost as a half seen sub text to the surface above it which I hope will excite the eye”.
