Mary was born in rural Northamptonshire in 1957. She studied at Northampton School of Art and West Surrey School of Art and later at Bristol University. For 20 years she has lived near Tiverton on the Devon/Somerset border where she has a studio and has painted continuously towards exhibitions in galleries in the south west of England and in Norfolk.
Surrounded by rolling hills and living within reach of Devon’s two coastlines, Mary Sumner finds much inspiration close at hand for her vivid paintings of country life. In daily walks she gathers notes, ideas and sketches to use in her lively compositions. Selective in the elements she puts together she seeks to capture the movements and habits of animals and birds and to convey the essence of her experience of them and their habitat.
Mary paints in acrylic on canvas with a broad and active stroke in saturated, bright colours. Her work is exuberant and joyful - a reflection of the enjoyment and amusement she takes in the natural world.
